Michael Oglesby CBE

In 1976 Michael founded the Bruntwood group of companies, which is privately held and owned by the Oglesby family. At the beginning of 2000, he gave up the joint roles of CEO and Chairman and his son, Chris, took over the day-to-day running of the company. Currently Michael devotes 20% of the week to Bruntwood in his role as Executive Chairman, and the remainder of his time is devoted to an extensive range of civic and charitable interests.

Michael is a Feoffee of Chetham's School of Music as well as leading the team responsible for building the new School of Music. He is also Chairman of a number of boards and committees, including the Governors of the Royal Northern College of Music (term ending December 2011), the Steering Board for the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, MIDAS - the inward investment organisation for Greater Manchester, the Growth Hub operational and strategic boards and the Oglesby Charitable Trust, which is one of the largest grant giving trusts in the North. In addition he sits on the board of the North West Business Leadership Team, the Manchester University Global Leadership Board and the GM LEP. He is also a Vice President of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

In 2007 Michael was installed as High Sheriff of Greater Manchester and in 2008 he was made Vice Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester. In 2006 he was voted Businessman of the Year in the North West by the CBI and also received an honorary law doctorate from the University of Manchester. In  2007 Aston University bestowed an honorary doctorate in Science upon him and in the same year he had an honorary degree conferred upon him by the Royal Northern College of Music. In November 2011 he and his wife Jean were presented with the Prince of Wales Medal for Arts Philanthropy 2011.

Michael was awarded the CBE in the January 2011 Honours List for his services to industry and charity.

He has been married for more than 44 years to his wife Jean and their two children, Chris and Kate, both now work in the family business. Michael is a strong believer in the benefits that core family values bring to a family owned business and sees the the role of business and business leaders as being key to creating successful communities. He is a strong believer in both personal and business philanthropy and he encourages others to follow this path.

Personal interests are varied and include theatre, music, sailing, skiing and walking.
