Alberton House was built on the site of the first Municipal Gas Works - the first location in the world to sell gas to the public. Alberton House is also famous for its location next to the Calatrava Bridge, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava who was so pleased with it he named it after himself! The bridge creates a pathway over the River Irwell linking Manchester to Salford and has taken its place in Manchester folklore. In the early 1990’s the IRA planted a bomb in the flowerbed at the entrance to Cardinal House, which is adjacent to Alberton House. The bomb exploded at 8.40am on a Friday morning and miraculously there were no fatalities. The force of the blast blew out all the windows in both buildings. When Alberton House was re-glazed, bombproof film was installed on each and every window. Every time a windowpane is re-glazed, film is always installed internally on the pane itself.
