When adventure sports festival Urban X arrived in Manchester in 2005 we thought long and hard about how we could get involved and offer genuine value to the event. With 25% of Manchester's office buildings at our disposal the answer soon became clear, why not launch the world's only urban climbing event? The Bruntwood Aerial Assault was born.
24 elite climbers were invited to scale 12 of the city's landmark buildings, a world away from the comfort of their usual mountains and crags. The competition was a huge success and we enabled Manchester to become the first city in the world to be used as a climbing frame.
In 2006 The Bruntwood Aerial Assault returned, another 24 competitors scaled 12 more buildings, we even challenged Spiderman to climb Bruntwood's Lowry House.
And if this wasn't enough adventure for one day, another Urban X event, The Rat Race, was taking place at ground level around the city. Our own Bruntwood teams took up this mental and physical challenge which saw them race around the city covering check points and scoring points for completing challenges including kayaking, biking and even creating their very own cocktail.
The Bruntwood Aerial Assault is exactly the type of event that excites us, a world first that allows us to use our buildings in an innovative way whilst creating a unique event for the people of Manchester.
