As part of our on-going involvement in the North West's arts scene, in 2005 we expanded our relationship with the Royal Exchange Theatre and, in conjunction with them, launched a national playwriting competition the only competition of its kind in the UK. Aimed at celebrating and discovering playwriting talent, The Bruntwood Playwriting Competition was open to anyone over the age of 18 from across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The biennial competition attracted over 1800 entries, of which 10 were put forward onto the shortlist.
In September 2006 the awards were made for the best three plays, the best regional play and the best play by a writer under 26, plus a year's bursary for a writer in residence.
Overall winner, Ben Musgrave was awarded £15,000 for his play 'Pretend you have big buildings' which will be staged at the Royal Exchange Theatre next year as part of Manchester International Festival.
