Day 5 – Yssingeaux to Romans sur Isere

The day dawned and we knew Pete would be happy – the sun was already beaming brightly. After some initial conformity on routes, the day was soon totally confused when we had not 2, but 3 possible ways to reach our next high carb intake. Yes, the riders were taking three different routes - a challenge for the support team!

Craig headed off as planned to avoid the early morning sun at 8.30, on route numero uno, preceded by Caroline, Matt, Rob V, Pete and Chris – off piste to their own route du jour. That left the rest, who on balance decided to go for the more scenic route deux – more climbs but less busy road. The car and van rendez-vouzed, after initial first feed, at Trence. Beautiful spot by the bridge, but the Quest van as usual blocks the entire village! The van then sped ahead to lunch stop – so quiet in Lalouvesc, until the riders arrive! They looked so strong climbing the mountain passes – it really is a sight to behold.

After lunch for groups one and two in quick succession, carefully prepared by Lucy, they’re off again. The van then tries to catch up with Craigo, to give him some well-earned calories. He looks a bit peaky after riding on empty, and does not stop talking after his 7 hours along – a tough stretch with no peleton formation to help him. After a well-earned tarte au pomme, he's fine. The van then speeds on, well as fast as a 3 metre long van full of luggage can on a mountain pass!

After prepping a little cold beer, water, sugary cakes for their arrival, we wait for what is group 2’s arrival – first. Another 30 minutes, and the first group arrive. Jen has had a nightmare day, with 3 punctures!! At last phone in with the car, she was gonna call it a day, but no, the girl done good and got her bronzed toned pins (pay me later Jen) into gear to complete the day in true style. A bottle of Rose later, and everyone is happy.
