Reducing our carbon impact

Reducing our carbon impact is a priority for our business and we’ve pledged to reduce our carbon emissions by 16% reduction by 2014.

We’re working towards this target by reducing the amount of energy we consume, minimising the waste generated from our buildings and encouraging our staff and customers to use sustainable transport.

The consumption of gas and electricity in Bruntwood buildings is where we can make the biggest difference, accounting for 98% of our direct carbon impact. By installing smart meters in the majority of our buildings, we can provide customers with instant access to their energy useage data. This insight will help them to make changes to how they consume energy, reducing their emissions and costs at the same time.

Minimising the waste generated from our buildings and our support for the ‘Halving Waste to Landfill’ commitment is also helping to make a difference. We provide our customers with a free recycling scheme and we’re dedicated to operating as a low waste business, working with our suppliers to make waste minimisation a condition of our contracts with them.

Although emissions from our own transport use are relatively small, we have an important role to play in encouraging the 45,000+ people who work in our buildings to use sustainable transport options. We promote cycling amongst our employees, with a bike loan scheme and cycling facilities and we’re looking at how we can provide central cycling facility hubs for our customers. We also organise the annual Bruntwood Ellipse, a charity cycling event that promotes cycling and raises money for our nominated charities.

  • Making a difference
I took advantage of the company’s Cycle to Work scheme, which lets you spend up to £1000 on a bike with the cost then deducted from your salary tax and national insurance free over a 12 month period. Cycling to work has improved my fitness more than anything, Being able to exercise on the way to and from work also frees up my evenings to spend more time with the kids
