Personal development

At Bruntwood, we have a strong belief in 'growing our own' – recruiting people for their talent and attitude and working with them to develop their skills and identifying ways to help them grow as both employees and as people.

Hear what our staff have to say:

“Bruntwood has an interesting way of developing you, it’s so organic that for the most part you won’t even realise it’s happening.

I arrived at Bruntwood as a Graduate Quantity Surveyor in the summer of 2008 and before I knew it, was well on the path to becoming the business’ first Procurement Manager in 2009. Now in 2011 I am on route to being chartered in purchasing and supply and this is thanks to the opportunities that the Bruntwood has given me. When the recessionary period hit, it would have been easy to trim the team to make necessary overhead savings, instead Bruntwood chose to re-deploy, recognising my transferable commercial skills and the potential cost savings that existed within the business.

Since taking up the post, there has been lots of scope to change the way we do business particularly in the service charge arena and now on top of my core procurement role and continued training I have been allowed to flex towards ancillary income generation which is great. If you are solely focused on ‘buying things’ you can lose perspective, so having a small sales role is really developing me into a rounded character….that and sharpening my tools for negotiation! The key it seems to opportunity at Bruntwood is to put your hand up, because they are certainly not scared of giving responsibility.”
Tom Renn, Procurement Manager

“I joined Bruntwood in 2009 and looking back over the two years I am really impressed with how far Bruntwood as a company have come with their learning & development opportunities.  During the recruitment process as I told that Bruntwood looks after its people and I have learnt over the past two years that this is true.

Starting my career with Bruntwood as a CSM I wasn't sure what learning opportunities would come my way. What I have found really great about Bruntwood is that everyone's opinions counts and they are always looking for ways to improve and perform better. Having 10 years experience in the hospitality Industry I felt really valued as a Bruntwood employee when I was able to give my view on how we could improve and input into future learning and development tools.

Seeing the successful roll out of the Bruntwood Standards and the induction pack along with excellent tools to measure performance have really made the service we deliver alot sharper and my role alot more rewarding. Recruiting the right people, setting the right standards, giving the right training and being able to review processes is the key to ensuring happy teams which in turn equals happy customers.

In addition as a company Bruntwood are always asking what training we need and this has enabled me to review my own development and see which areas I would like to be developed further.

I have also been able to see key people develop in their roles. Where there is no set succession plan Bruntwood are very good at thinking outside the box to retain good people which is excellent. The learning and development of everyone in Bruntwood is an on going long term journey which doesn't stop. Not only do they now have a great induction pack and excellent in house training sessions, they are always re-evaluating and adding sessions where needed. In addition each person is dealt with as an individual and where external training is required for development this is always considered and is never out of the question.

All in all I would say Bruntwood has excellent learning and development opportunities for anyone in the business who is keen to learn and grow. Bruntwood are a very supportive forward thinking company!”
